| Thursday May 14th 12pm EST From Detection to Control:Legionellosis Investigationsin Rural Communities in Northern New Brunswick. with Dr. Rita Gad, MD/PhD Regional Medical Officer of HealthNorthern Region, New Brunswick Register Now Using two real-world case studies from the region, this presentation walks through how Legionella can emerge in rural settings and what that looks like on the ground for public health teams. It covers how cases were detected, how potential sources were identified and assessed, and the practical steps taken to control and reduce risk. The session also touches on some of the challenges that come with environmental sampling and wraps up with key lessons and takeaways that may be useful for public health practice more broadly.  Dr. Rita Gad is an MD/PhD public health physician serving as the Regional Medical Officer of Health for the northern region of New Brunswick, a largely rural and francophone area. She has collaborated on various local, provincial, and national research projects and initiatives, demonstrating expertise in health economics, infectious disease epidemiology, applied research methodology, and evaluation. The Public Health Agency of Canada is pleased to announce the next session of the Enteric Outbreak Seminar Series (EOSS). EOSS is brought to you by the Centre for Food-borne, Environmental and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases’ Outbreak Management Division. The Outbreak Management Division detects, assesses, and responds to multi-jurisdictional outbreaks of enteric illnesses in Canada and provides expertise, support, and training to public health authorities investigating enteric illness outbreaks.
EOSS aims to increase knowledge and awareness of enteric illness outbreak investigations in Canada, including novel approaches, research, special projects, and upcoming or recent changes in policy or practice.
The next seminar will take place on June 10th, 2025 from 14:00-15:00 EST. Live audio interpretation (French) and live captioning (French and English) will be available.
Findings from the freezer: A multi-jurisdictional outbreak of E. coli O26:H11 linked to pizza pops
In November 2025, the Public Health Agency of Canada began investigating a new multi-jurisdictional cluster of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O26:H11. Through case re-interviews and the analysis of invoices and purchase records, investigators identified the source: frozen pizza pops. This seminar will provide an overview of the collaborative outbreak investigation, including sampling results and laboratory challenges associated with isolating STEC in foods such as pizza pops.
