The Saskatoon Farm Outbreak in Calgary Zone
In July 2025, Environmental Public Health, Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone identified a gastrointestinal outbreak linked to a large public multipurpose u-pick, restaurant, foreign worker, and special event facility after multiple illness reports were received. Early case interviews and stool submissions later identified Entamoeba histolytica (Amoebiasis) and Enteroinvasive Escherichia Coli (EIEC) as pathogens of concern. The presentation summarizes the outbreak investigation stages, mitigation measures, and eventual identification of the common source. This presentation also illustrates why it’s important to have a specialized(complementary) team to carry out a coordinated investigation to contain a large novel waterborne outbreak effectively.
Jessica Lee is a rural public health inspector based in Okotoks, Alberta. Sunil Beeharry is a Drinking Water Coordinator based in Calgary, Alberta. Tara Hluchy is the Urban Compliance Team Coordinator based in Calgary Zone.
