Alex Nilsson Award
Volunteers are essential to the ongoing success of the BC Branch of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. The Alex Nilsson Award was created to commend one hard-working volunteer who has given considerable time, skill and effort to the BC Branch, CIPHI, and/or his or her community and has had a positive impact in British Columbia and/or Canada.
* This award honours a volunteer who has given much time, skill and effort to the BC Branch, CIPHI, or his/her community.
* Any member of the BC Branch, CIPHI is eligible for nomination.

Bob Herbison
The Bob Herbison award is presented to any student member of the BC Branch who has completed level 5 or 6 of BCIT’s Environmental Health Program, who, in the opinion of the Faculty of Environmental Health and approved by the BC Branch Executive, will demonstrate the ability to deal effectively with a variety of field situations with the high standard and characteristics as exhibited by Bob Herbison, such as maturity of attitude, involvement and participation in class activities, demonstrated leadership ability, integrity, interpersonal skills and effective communication with peers and faculty at BCIT.

John A. Stringer Award
The John A. Stringer Award is presented to a graduating student, completing levels 7 or 8 of BCIT’s Environmental Health program that is of sound character with leadership potential as identified by the faculty of BCIT in consultation with the executive of the BC Branch of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors. Dr. John Blatherwick
This endowment was established in 2007 with funds raised by friends and colleagues of Dr. John Blatherwick (and matched by the British Columbia Institute of Technology) in honour of his retirement in 2007 as Chief Medical Officer for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Dr. Blatherwick has been an inspirational and important leader in the development of public health in British Columbia and a long-standing supporter of Public Health Inspectors and the Environmental Health program at BCIT. The annual income earned from his fund each year provides an entrance award to a student entering BCIT’s Environmental Health, Public Health Inspection program.

The Environmental Health Medallion was presented to a student who has completed Term 6 of the environmental Health Program at BCIT, and who displays good communication and interpersonal skills, maturity, empathy and leadership ability. Students and faculty participate in the selection of the recipient.
The award was increased to $200 in 1992.

The award was granted to a student gaining the title of “Most Promising Public Health Inspector”. The criteria established by White Spot Limited for determining the award winner were based on the Candidates’ examination marks with emphasis on food and quality control, the mark given to a report on Food Processing, financial need and lastly, the candidate who showed most promise as a field inspector.
